Geography

At Rosehill Methodist Primary Academy, pupils are provided with a high-quality geography education that inspires in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Teaching equips pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.  Four key areas are studied that help pupils of all ages to make connections and ask and answer geographical enquiry.  The key areas are:

  • Locational Knowledge
  • Place Knowledge
  • Human and Physical Geography
  • Geographical Skills and Fieldwork

Pupils begin to develop contextual knowledge in Reception, by observing and recording the world as they see it - the school grounds and on local trips and visits.  Pupils in Year 1 continue to build on this knowledge and understanding by learning how where they are fits into the bigger geographical picture - firstly by learning to locate Ashton, then London, then England, the United Kingdom, Europe and finally the world.  This contextual knowledge is revisited every year in the same way - working from the inside, out.  

In Lower Key Stage 2, pupils compare their learning so far with a region in Europe.  In Upper Key Stage 2, this is further compared to a non-European region through the study of Chile.  Throughout the units of study, pupils will acquire, practise and apply key geographical terminology.
